I’m so glad I purchased this book - it’s beautifully written and illustrated, a combination of words that are poetry, gorgeously drawn images, and actual photos taken by Graciela Iturbide. So when I saw that Isabel Quintero and Zeke Peña had created a graphic novel based on the life of Graciela Iturbide I immediately ordered a copy from our local bookstore! My kids are also first generation US citizens with immigrant parents, and are indigenous Mexican from their father’s side, so I have naturally been gravitating towards reading books that will expand my own personal horizons, and that will also allow my kids to understand and embrace their heritage too. It is the most disturbing work of fiction I have ever read. Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica is a masterpiece that exposes the grotesque horror of necro-capitalism and the banalities of social convention that sustain it. Their deaths are just the cost of doing business. The deaths of slaughterhouse workers, like those of the animals they carve up and process for grocery chains everywhere, is facilitated by a larger, systemic indifference to their plight. These multi-billion dollar companies are supported by the politicians whose campaigns they fund and the civil society groups they finance. A predominately immigrant workforce, their status makes them vulnerable to the whims of highly exploitative employers who are often able to deploy one of our country’s most racist police forces-ICE-to keep the workers in line. In 2020, one of the groups who were most vulnerable to disease and death were slaughterhouse workers. ![]() ![]() It’s a way of looking at how capitalism organizes segments of the population in ways that result in some groups of workers being exposed to extreme dangers and even death as a routine part of the production process. “Necro-capitalism” was a term I first learned in 2020, at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. ![]() ![]() It doesn’t add much new to the hero’s journey so to speak, but it does enough with the elements it has to make something new. ![]() For those intrigued by Cates’ use of Captain Universe (and count me one of them), this story will at least keep you satisfied with how it pans out.īoiled down to its essentials - which would mean removing a lot of Eddie/Venom banter via captions to one another - this is a very basic story about our hero finding a magical “elixir” to use on the villain for the final act. If you’re not a fan of deus ex machina, you will be disappointed with how Eddie finds the strength to fight back in the final moments. The narrative is rather basic in its main purpose and uses the “find another gear to win” method, which will satisfy fans who are here for the big blockbuster action. The main story has a huge idea at work here that advances Symbiotes beyond aliens with teeth and insatiable hunger.Īlong the way, a classic character is revived and all the build-up of this Symbiote purgatory helps make it feel at least a little bit earned. Along the way, Eddie has Rex Strickland as a guide, and it’s clear Cates is adding more to the Venom mythology with an impressive new layer that’s put the usually violent and physical alien race into a new spiritual place.
